SCC Fantasy Football Competition: 2020 Sports Marketing Challenge!

Welcome to the sixth annual edition of Sports Career Consulting’s Fantasy Football Competition.  Does your class have what it takes to unseat Karen Russo’s class at Hinsdale Central in Illinois as defending (and two-time) champs with the 2020  sports marketing challenge?

The competition features six “sports marketing challenges”, each designed to provide a fun and unique way to teach sports marketing by taking a project-oriented approach to learning.  Each challenge aligns with specific lessons from our curriculum with a focus on highlighting some of the most important sports business concepts.

Not unlike the current state of the global sports industry, this year’s version of our fantasy football project will have a different look.  With the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, we will not feature a “player draft” component with this year’s competition.  That means all of the emphasis will be placed on performing well with each of the six sports marketing challenges.

The competition will kick off in two weeks when the first sports marketing challenge is due.  Challenge #1 will tackle concepts like revenue, expense, economic impact, competition and marketing plan development.  The remaining five challenges will be posted soon.  This year’s challenges will cover the following essential sports marketing principles:

  • Challenge #1: Financing / Marketing Plan (Lesson 3.2, Lesson 3.5, Unit 5)
  • Challenge #2: Branding (Unit 6)
  • Challenge #3: Communications / PR Plan (Unit 11)
  • Challenge #4: Fan Experience (Unit 10)
  • Challenge #5: Ticket Sales, Promotion & Sponsorship (Units 7, 8, 9)
  • Challenge #6: Digital / Social Media Marketing (Unit 4 / Lesson 4.9)

Even if you do not have plans to participate in our national competition, you are encouraged to download the project anyway.  You may find some components that provide a fit for whatever you are currently teaching in class, or you may even want to host a competition within your own classroom!  Either way, this project provides a great way to teach students some of the most important and fundamental sports business concepts.  Let’s have some fun!

Please let us know ASAP if you are interested in participating!

SCC Fantasy Football Project 2020: Sports Marketing Challenges Guide

SCC FFL 2020: Sports Marketing Challenges Guide

SCC’s fantasy football project is designed to replicate real challenges that professional football league executives are faced with every season.  This year, the league is in uncharted waters, attempting to navigate a season amid an ongoing pandemic.  Like the NFL, students will address some of these same issues along with important sports business concepts ranging from the development of a marketing plan to ticket sales, sponsorship and branding.

Here is a guide to how the sports marketing challenges presented in the 2020 edition of SCC’s Fantasy Football project aligns with SCC’s curriculum:

  • Challenge #1:  Lesson 3.2 – Financial Structure of Sports, Lesson 3.5 – Economic Impact, Unit 5 – Financing / Marketing Plan
  • Challenge #2:  Unit 6 – Branding, Licensing and Merchandising
  • Challenge #3:  Unit 11 – Communications Strategies
  • Challenge #4:  Unit 10 – Fan Experience / Stadium Design
  • Challenge #5:  Unit 7 – Sales, Service & Promotion, Unit 8 – Sponsorship, Unit 9 – Ticket Sales
  • Challenge #6: Lesson 4.9 – Digital Marketing
* For those participating in our national competition, due dates for each challenge are also included in this document.  You will want to review the due dates to make sure your students have time to complete each challenge before they are required to be submitted to the “league office” (SCC).
