Variety revealed its list of the most-watched television telecasts of the year. NFL “MyCause MyCleats” Initiative (Publicity Lesson Plan)

The NFL is notoriously straight-laced (pardon the pun) when it comes to regulating player appearances on the field. Want to a wear a brand not affiliated with the NFL as a sponsor? Stricly a no-no. Want to customize gear and/or share a written message with fans using any part of the uniform? Go for it, just expect a hefty fine and stern condemnation from the league office.

However, four years ago, the NFL actually started to encourage its players to wear cleats customized with a message supporting causes each player supports (albeit just for one week). It was a great way to raise not only awareness but also money for causes ranging from mental health, ALS, cancer and animal welfare to children who need reading glasses (see Von Miller, Denver Broncos). Cleats were then auctioned on the NFL’s official auction site (yes, that is really a thing) with proceeds going to each respective charity.

The initiative was a smashing success. This year, the NFL’s “My Cleats, My Cause” program is back for its 5th season, and the message is being amplified using all of the league’s marketing might. According to the league, more than 1,000 players showcasd their causes for Week 13 NFL games this year.

Consider using the NFL’s #MyCleatsMyCause initiative to spark a class discussion relating to publicity & social issues (11.2 & 11.8). Ask students if they are aware of any specific causes their favorite players support. Here are a few questions to consider asking your students… In addition, considering turning this into a fun classroom activity by asking students to design their own custom cause-related cleats for their favorite player or even your high school football team using the downloadable templates (use the membership link below to download a design template / activity and suggestions for class discussion questions below).

    Topics explored:

    • Publicity & Goodwill (Lesson 11.2)
    • Community Relations (Lesson 11.2)
    • Social Issues (Lesson 11.8)

    Lesson plan bundle includes:

NBA “City Edition” Uniforms (Branding Lesson Plan)

Looking for a fun activity idea to help engage students in the short week leading up to the holiday weekend? This “NBA City Edition” lesson plan offers a great way to explore the concept of branding in a way that is certain to capture the attention of your students.

With this lesson plan, your students will explore some of the recently revealed “City Edition” uniforms NBA teams introduce each season in collaboration with Nike. What causes or community relations initiatives might the design help to support?

Thanksgiving Brands (New – Marketing Currents subscriber bonus resource)

Our annual Thanksgiving PPT discussion is now available to download for Marketing Currents subscribers to help engage your students in a marketing discussion leading up to Thanksgiving.

A few years ago, a Houston Chronicle story suggested that much of what we celebrate on Thanksgiving is the direct result of marketing.

Over time, a number of brands have become synonymous with Thanksgiving feasts, with consumers filling supermarket shopping carts with these products every year. What brands played a role in your Thanksgiving Day meals? There are far more than you probably considered!

For example, millions of green bean casseroles are served during the holiday season. That’s why French’s French Fried Onions, a core ingredient to the holiday classic, was ranked third of all branded edible items the week of Thanksgiving, according to data provider IRI. (Ocean Spray Jellied Cranberry Sauce was fourth.) The brand’s French fried onions brought in nearly $14 million in sales the week of Thanksgiving, with total sales in a three-week span of the holiday coming in at $30 million. Ocean Spray sells 72 million cans of cranberry sauce between September and December. That means about 80% of the company’s total sauce business occurs during the holidays.

        Ask students:

        1. What brands play a role in your Thanksgiving Day meals?  There are far more than you probably considered!
        2. Which brands do you think are big sellers over the Thanksgiving holiday?
        3. Try to create a list of at least five popular Thanksgiving related food brands, then review the following slides for some examples.

When live sports returned in July of 2020, the jubilation among fans was evident on social media as fans finally had something to cheer for (and about) amid the ongoing pandemic.  Twitter released a report sharing some metrics relating to fan response on the popular social media platform as leagues like NASCAR, PGA Tour, MLB and NBA announced their restart plans.

The statistics shared in this PPT represent the time period from May of 2020, without live sports, to July of 2020, after sports began to resume play. Twitter used this data and these graphics to promote its advertising opportunities to brands looking to connect with sports fans.

              • Fan engagement (Lesson 2.7)

              Lesson Plan:  COVID-19 Industry Impact

In the spring, the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill, closing businesses and forcing consumers around the world to quarantine in their own homes.  The sports and entertainment industry, like most businesses, was not immune, as leagues were forced to cancel or postpone seasons, leaving fans desperate for ways to consume their favorite sporting events.  This PPT addresses the impact the health crisis had on the industry.

Lesson Plan:  Promotion – MiLB Name Game

One popular trend with Minor League Baseball teams the last few years has been a “one-off” rebrand in which the team changes its name, logo and uniform for one game with a food-centric theme, typically a “cuisine” that represents their local area. The promotions helped teams to sell tickets, create buzz surrounding the brand, connect with the community and break merchandise sales records.
