Beijing 2022: Winter Olympic Games by the Numbers
The 2022 Winter Olympic Games are set to begin in Beijing on Friday. Yet covid fatigue and political discord have dampened the enthusiasm that typically surrounds one of the biggest events in the world. Sponsors have been forced to walk a fine line between leveraging their investment to build awareness for their brands and avoiding any negative publicity for being associated with the Games. More than any other event in recent memory, it will be interesting to see how big brands strategically approach their involvement with the Winter Olympics. Either way, the event is well- positioned to be one of the most talked-about Olympic Games in history.
How can you align the Beijing Games with the concepts you are covering in class? We have created a presentation that will help you to connect with a variety of lessons explored in SCC’s textbook, including:
- Broadcast Rights / Ratings (Lesson 3.2)
- Event Management (Lesson 2.9)
- Economic Impact (Lesson 3.5)
- Sponsorship (Lesson 8.1, 8.2, 8.3)
- Ticket Sales (Unit 9)
Other recommended discussion topics include:
- Communications / PR (Unit 11)
- Social Issues / Ethics (Lesson 11.6)
- Sports Business Leadership
We have also included a project which encourages students to create a new Olympic sport. You can download the project by clicking the link below.

Holiday Promotions (Sales & Promotion Lesson)
Consumers spend more money during the holidays than any other time of the year. As a result, everyone from big box retailers to small businesses roll out a myriad of holiday-themed promotions.

ACTIVITY IDEA #1: Consider encouraging students to come up with a holiday promotion for their favorite team(s), event or entertainment property. Will they sell tickets? Merchandise? What will they do to incentivize sales? How long with the promotional offer last?
ACTIVITY IDEA #2: After reviewing the PPT, encourage students to develop a holiday-themed promotional campaign for your school athletics program. What will they try to sell? How will they attract attention from fans (consumers) within the community?

NFL “MyCause MyCleats” Initiative (Publicity Lesson Plan)
The NFL is notoriously straight-laced (pardon the pun) when it comes to regulating player appearances on the field. Want to a wear a brand not affiliated with the NFL as a sponsor? Stricly a no-no. Want to customize gear and/or share a written message with fans using any part of the uniform? Go for it, just expect a hefty fine and stern condemnation from the league office.
However, five years ago, the NFL actually started to encourage its players to wear cleats customized with a message supporting causes each player supports (albeit just for one week). It was a great way to raise not only awareness but also money for causes ranging from mental health, ALS, cancer and animal welfare to children who need reading glasses. Cleats were then auctioned on the NFL’s official auction site with proceeds going to each respective charity.
The initiative was a smashing success. This year, the NFL’s “My Cleats, My Cause” program is back for its 6th season, and the message is being amplified using all of the league’s marketing might. According to the league, more than 1,000 players showcasd their causes for Week 13 NFL games this year.
Consider using the NFL’s #MyCleatsMyCause initiative to spark a class discussion relating to publicity & social issues (11.2 & 11.6). Ask students if they are aware of any specific causes their favorite players support. Here are a few questions to consider asking your students… In addition, considering turning this into a fun classroom activity by asking students to design their own custom cause-related cleats for their favorite player or even your high school football team using the downloadable templates (use the membership link below to download a design template / activity and suggestions for class discussion questions provided in the activity).
Topics explored:
- Publicity & Goodwill (Lesson 11.2)
- Community Relations (Lesson 11.2)
- Social Issues (Lesson 11.6)

- Activity Packet (Student)

NBA “City Edition” Uniforms (Branding Lesson Plan)
Looking for a fun activity idea to help engage students in the short week leading up to the holiday weekend? This “NBA City Edition” lesson plan offers a great way to explore the concept of branding in a way that is certain to capture the attention of your students.
With this lesson plan, your students will explore some of the recently revealed “City Edition” uniforms NBA teams introduce each season in collaboration with Nike. This year, the collection featureds “mixtape” editions of the popular jerseys, designed in conjunction with promotions surrounding the league’s celebration of its 75th anniversary.
This lesson plan includes a PPT to aid in discussion along with a student activity that encourages students to design their own version of a “City Edition” uniform. Videos are embedded in the presentation, but if you have trouble getting them to play, the original YouTube links are provided in the last slide. Encourage students to think about your city and community. What does your hometown’s brand look like? What imagery reflects the community’s traditions and values and how might that be incorporated into your design? What causes or community relations initiatives might the design help to support?
Topics explored in this lesson plan:
- Branding (Lesson 6.1)
- Licensing (Lesson 6.1, Lesson 6.2)
- Sponsorship (Lesson 8.1)
- Community Relations (Lesson 11.2)
